Understanding Your Child's Emotions

With children being out of school, there may be a change in behaviors your family experiences. Many of these behaviors are rooted in the uncertainty that is occurring in society.
Here are some ways of helping your child identify emotions:
  1. Use animations
  2. Be a role model
  3. Name the feeling. All feelings are accepted. Certain actions must be limited. “You are angry. Tell him what you want/need with words not fists.”
  4. Use songs
  5. Use books
  6. Use mindfulness techniques: a mindful minute, 5 breaths, with music (listen to specific instruments, voices, sounds), balancing on one foot, etc. (Yoga Activity Below)
  7. Play games/ Engage in activities (see examples below)
  8. My emotions wheel art project (below)
  9. Refer to Anger Management Skill Cards for more ideas

Practicing compassion in our daily lives helps us embrace challenging relationships and manage stress of modern society. Today's society is in a unique situation where our traditional lives and routines have been put on hold. The majority of our time is being spent at home with our immediate families without a clear timeline of how long these changes will be in place. In this time of uncertainty, families may see kiddos facing challenges with their self-esteem and emotions. Self-esteem can influence life in myriad ways, from academic and professional success to relationships and mental health.
Have conversations with your kids about their self-esteem and emotions. Use some of the resources below to prompt discussion and work together on some of the activities!
